Intimate Apparel is the story of two hearts meant to be together, but kept apart by the rules of society. The already fragmented New York cityscape was broken up even further by the lighting, enforcing the societal boundaries conspiring to keep Esther and Mr. Marks apart. The city looms behind Esther at the heartbreaking conclusion of her story.
